The movement you are watching
This is a procedural 3D model built to scale from the real 2824-2 architecture — gear tooth counts (barrel 90, center 60, third 64, fourth 70, escape 15 → a 4500:1 barrel-to-escapement reduction), arbor positions in millimetres, and layer order taken from the movement's actual assembly. The balance is oscillating, the escape wheel is stepping one tooth per beat, and the train is turning — exactly as it would on a bench.
How It Works

One Barrel, Eight Ticks a Second

Four teams of parts solve four problems: store energy, divide it, release it, and govern it. Every mechanical watch works this way — the 2824-2 is simply the cleanest mass-produced expression of it.

01 · STORE

Mainspring Barrel

A coiled torsion spring inside a toothed drum stores ~38 hours of energy. A slipping bridle prevents over-winding — the spring can never be damaged by winding.

02 · DIVIDE

Gear Train

Four wheels and pinions (90/12, 60/8, 64/8, 70/7 teeth) reduce the barrel's one turn per 7.5 h down to a 4500:1 ratio at the escape wheel, converting spring torque into steady rotation.

03 · RELEASE

Escapement

The 15-tooth escape wheel and the pallet fork release energy in discrete steps — one tooth per beat. The pallet jewels lock, impulse and unlock 8 times per second.

04 · GOVERN

Balance & Hairspring

The 4 Hz balance wheel + hairspring is the timekeeper. Each beat it returns to the escapement a precise slice of energy — and each oscillation advances the hands exactly 1/28,800 of an hour.

Automatic winding path
Rotor swings with wrist motion → reversing wheels convert both directions into one → ratchet wheel + click wind the barrel arbor. ~12 hours of wear ≈ a full wind. The crown can also wind it manually (clockwise).
Setting path
Pulled crown position 1: sliding pinion drives the minute train for time setting — and a stop lever hacks the seconds to zero. Position 2: quickset date at 3:00.
Grades

One Calibre, Four Personalities

ETA offers the same 2824-2 in four executions. Diameter, thickness, jewels and beat rate are identical — the grade changes regulation, finishing and materials. This decides where the watch lands on the price shelf.

Top-grade parts also swap the balance (Glucydur instead of nickel-plated), the hairspring (Anachron instead of Nivarox), the shock device (Incabloc instead of Novodiac/ETACHOC) and the pallet jewels (natural red rubies instead of polyrubies). All grades share the same geometry — which is why any grade can be serviced by any watchmaker with the same parts kit.

Heritage

Four Decades of Service

Few movements have shaped the industry more. The 2824-2 defined the "workhorse automatic" — and its architecture lives on in the clones that now power half the microbrand world.

1982

The -2 arrives

ETA launches the 2824-2 as the second generation of a design inherited from Eterna's 1427. It replaces the 2824 with a hacking seconds feature and refined winding — instantly becoming the default Swiss automatic.

1983–2002

The industry's backbone

The Swatch Group's ETA supplies the entire Swiss industry. Tissot, Hamilton, Longines, Oris, Steinhart, Marathon and hundreds of brands fit the 2824-2. It powers divers rated to 1,000 m and dress watches thinner than 7 mm.

2002–2013

Patents expire

Key design patents lapse, and the clone era begins. Manufacturers replicate the 2824-2 architecture almost exactly — the most-copied movement in modern horology.

Supply tightens, clones boom

ETA announces it will stop supplying outside the Swatch Group. The gap is filled by the clones — and by Sellita's SW200-1, built on tooling so close to the 2824-2 that parts interchange. The workhorse never died; it multiplied.
